The comparison rules
- A ¥3,000 budget per person, including food, otoshi, seating charges and tax. Otoshi is the small starter served with a cover charge at many izakaya.
- One draft beer and one highball at each place.
- Different dishes at each restaurant, chosen as food I want with my drinks.
- No special coupons. The walk-in promotions offered when I visited count.
- At Uokichi Sakaba, I ordered a mega-sized Kaku whisky highball. I take the size and brand into account.
Individual drink prices in the text are before tax. The budget calculations include tax, otoshi and seating charges. The food combinations differ by restaurant, and I haven’t added dishes just to spend the full ¥3,000. The ranking reflects how satisfied I felt after my visits.
Tachinomi Takioka
Standing bars are always cheaper? Time to test that assumption.

For a comparison of Ueno’s standing bars, I wanted to include Takioka. Together with Kadokura, it represents that style of drinking in this article.

My strongest impression from the standing bars this time was that they weren’t as cheap as I’d expected. Somewhere in my mind, I’d assumed standing up would be much cheaper than having a seat.
But once I order a beer, a highball and the food I actually want, the format alone doesn’t settle the question. I wanted to consider how satisfying the visit was alongside the other four restaurants.

Beer, highball, stew and skewer prices follow a June 2026 listing; tuna uses the sign I photographed. This calculation treats it as a pay-as-you-order standing-bar visit, with no otoshi or seating charge.

Tachinomi Kadokura
A comparison showed that standing bars weren’t the only answer.

My second standing bar is Kadokura, a familiar name for people who drink around Ueno 6-chome. I included it alongside Takioka as the other example of this style.

Looking back, I had expected too much from standing bars on price alone. Shinjidai impressed me in particular, and changed my instinct to head for a standing bar whenever I wanted a cheap drink.
If you love the standing-bar atmosphere, that has its own appeal. Here, though, I’m comparing satisfaction on a ¥3,000 budget. My overall verdict against the other four places is at the end.

Horumon Sakaba
¥290 beer, ¥190 highballs. And properly ice-cold.

Next is Horumon Sakaba, one of my classic-style izakaya picks. There was a promotion when I visited: draft beer was ¥290 and a highball ¥190, before tax.

The drinks were ice-cold too. When I’ve come out for a drink, getting a properly chilled glass matters. Alongside the price, that’s one of the details I remember clearly from this visit.
I drank with oysters and skewers here, and both tasted good. Add those very cold drinks and you have the kind of evening I like. It went beyond cheap alcohol: I could enjoy seafood and meat too. Price wasn’t the only reason I left Horumon Sakaba satisfied.
The two drinks came to ¥480 before tax, or ¥528 including tax. That leaves plenty of a ¥3,000 budget for food. For someone like me who wants to eat well too, it makes a real difference.
Promotional prices on my visit. Two drinks total ¥528 including tax; food and otoshi are extra.

Uokichi Sakaba — Ueno
The mega Kaku highball really is enormous.

Uokichi Sakaba also had draft beer on promotion at ¥290, and it was ice-cold here too. For my highball, I ordered the mega-sized Kaku at ¥750. Both prices are before tax.

That mega Kaku highball is huge. Put ¥750 beside Horumon Sakaba’s ¥190 and it looks expensive, but this was a mega serving. Comparing the two as though they were identical glasses would miss the point.
The beer and mega Kaku came to ¥1,040 before tax, or ¥1,144 with tax. It’s a different use of the drinks budget from Horumon Sakaba. When I judge value, the size and the whisky in the glass matter too.
Beer was on promotion when I visited. The two drinks total ¥1,144 including tax; food and otoshi are extra. The highball is mega-sized.

Shinjidai — Ueno
Shinjidai was the pleasant surprise of this comparison.

Shinjidai Ueno was better than I expected. The food tasted good, the service was good, and it felt cheaper than the standing bars I compared it with. I’m happy to give it credit for that.

Low prices aren’t enough if the food or service leaves me dissatisfied. At Shinjidai, both were good, which made this visit memorable. Dismissing a place simply because it’s a chain would be a mistake.
I came away with a high opinion of Shinjidai Ueno. It’s now firmly among my options for the next time I drink in the area.
Prices on the menu I photographed outside. Two drinks total ¥374 including tax; food and otoshi are extra.

Toriichizu — Ueno Ekimae
This visit didn’t live up to the earlier ones.

To me, both the food and service at Toriichizu had slipped compared with earlier visits. That stood out this time. Shinjidai’s strong showing made the difference between these two chains especially noticeable.

Affordable drinks matter, but I choose a restaurant by whether the food and service make me want to return. On that basis, Toriichizu didn’t meet my expectations this time.
Shinjidai was good. But once I include Toriichizu, I can’t give all chains a single glowing verdict. Two restaurants of the same type left very different impressions.

What can I eat and drink for less than ¥3,000?
I don’t choose a restaurant on drink prices alone. I think about the food I can enjoy, whether I can sit down, and whether the service helps make the visit satisfying.
These are tax-inclusive budget calculations based on menu prices, not receipt totals from the day. The dishes and quantities differ between restaurants. Horumon Sakaba and Uokichi Sakaba each have a ¥450 otoshi charge in these calculations.
| Restaurant | Dishes that work well together | Two drinks | Estimated total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Takioka | Stew, 2 chicken-and-garlic skewers & tuna sashimi | ¥800 | ¥1,600 |
| Kadokura | Ham cutlet, beef-tendon stew, 5 skewers & tonpeiyaki | ¥770 | ¥2,680 |
| Horumon Sakaba | 2 oysters, 2 skewers, offal stew & edamame | ¥528 | ¥2,793 |
| Uokichi Sakaba | Lightly seared cured mackerel & offal stew | ¥1,144 | ¥2,804 |
| Shinjidai | 6 Dengushi skewers, cabbage, burdock tempura & chicken yukhoe-style dish | ¥374 | ¥2,343 |
| Toriichizu | 3 skin skewers, Imabari-style chicken, 2 fried chicken pieces & potato salad | ¥438 | ¥2,445 |
Uokichi includes a mega Kaku highball. Beer at both classic izakaya and Horumon Sakaba’s highball use the promotions offered on my visits. Totals estimate the selected combinations; this is not a ranking from cheapest to most expensive.
A place such as Takioka can make a very inexpensive stop if I order only a few dishes. Even so, my order of preference after these visits stays the same. The number on the bill matters, but so does how satisfied I feel afterward.
Where would I drink next? Here’s my ranking.
After comparing these six places, my order is: first, classic izakaya; second, chains; third, standing bars. Shinjidai was especially good—better than I expected. Standing bars, on the other hand, didn’t feel as cheap as I’d imagined.
I judged whether I wanted to go back, taking flavor and service into account as well as drink prices.
1st place — Classic izakaya
Horumon Sakaba and Uokichi Sakaba made this my most satisfying category. The ice-cold drinks stood out, and I appreciated the promotional prices. For my next visit, this is where I’d start looking.
2nd place — Chains
Shinjidai Ueno exceeded my expectations for both food and service. It also felt cheaper than the standing bars, which made an impression. At Toriichizu, though, I felt the food and service had declined. Taken together, the two put this category in second place. My opinion of Shinjidai itself remains high.
3rd place — Standing bars
Takioka and Kadokura didn’t give me the low-price advantage I’d expected. Standing or sitting doesn’t determine value on its own. I want to judge the price, food and service together, and choose somewhere I feel good about afterward.
